When to start training your puppy (hint: today)
Everyone waits until 6 months. By then, you've missed the most important training window of your dog's life.
If you're waiting until your puppy is six months old to start "real" training, you're already behind. The most important weeks of your dog's life happen before you ever think of it as training.
The 16-week socialization window
Between about 3 weeks and 16 weeks old, your puppy's brain is wired to decide what in the world is safe and what is scary. After that window closes, their default assumption flips — anything new is a threat until proven otherwise. A dog that didn't meet umbrellas, kids on scooters, loud trucks, bearded men, slippery floors, or other dogs during that window often spends the rest of their life nervous about those things.
This isn't a "nice-to-have." It's the single biggest thing that separates a confident adult dog from a reactive one.
What actually helps during this window
Short, positive exposures to as many different environments, people, sounds, and surfaces as you can safely manage. The goal isn't a dog that tolerates stuff. The goal is a dog that finds the world mildly boring.
- Carry your puppy into a hardware store, a feed store, or a friend's garage.
- Let them watch traffic from a safe distance.
- Let kind strangers feed them a treat (not pet them from above, which puppies hate).
- Walk them on grass, concrete, metal grates, wobbly surfaces.
Pair each new thing with a treat they only get in that context. The pairing is doing more work than you think.
What about vaccines?
The old advice was "don't take your puppy anywhere until all shots are done at 16 weeks." That advice was based on parvo risk alone and ignores the much bigger risk — a lifetime of behavior problems. The modern consensus from AVSAB (the behavior veterinarians) is that controlled socialization starting at 7–8 weeks is both safe and critical, as long as you're smart about where you go.
Translation: don't let your puppy sniff random puddles outside PetSmart. Do let them meet vetted dogs and ride in your car to new environments.
What we do in Puppy Fundamentals
We work with 8-week to 6-month puppies in Houston on exactly this: structured exposure, name recognition, early recall, crate training, potty training, and bite inhibition. By the time your puppy is six months old, you've got a confident, communicative dog instead of a project.
If you have a new puppy or you're about to pick one up, the sooner we start, the easier your next ten years are.
